New Indoor Recreation Centre at Lightsview

Thanks to years of lobbying by Councillors, Council staff, Basketball SA, Disability Sports SA and maybe a few others I don’t know about, and the final successful push to the line by local MP, Dana Wortley, in 2016 Council was finally offered some land at Lightsview by the State Government for our new Indoor Recreation Centre.

In early 2017 Council will be asking the community what facilities they would like to see in the centre, with the only guaranteed facilities at the moment being the relocation of the North Adelaide Basketball Club from their current woeful site at Hillcrest.

To help in the estimated $18M investment in this centre (subject to facilities chosen of course), it is expected that Council will be looking to sell the current site of the Rockets.

Personally, I have long pushed for a pool in the area, even if only a smallish one. That will be dependant on what happens to the one at the Strathmont Centre (my inside word is that it will be demolished) and the one at the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre (booked solid).

Even though Council and I can’t guarantee what you or anyone may ask for may occur at the site, subject to basketball, what would you like to see in our new indoor rec centre?

Please tell me below!

  • Would love to see a pool of 25m minimum also similar to the amazing pool that the Campbell town encorporated into their new Leisure Centre . Would be great to see a splash area for kids and a lap pool that adults and kids can enjoy all year round indoors.

  • I think a Pool would be fantastic, our options in this area are quite limited as you mention Mark. With young children we generally travel to water world at ridgehaven although we recently visited the new Campbelltown rec centre which is slightly closer. something similar to that would be great for this area.

  • A Swimming Pool

  • I would love to have an area with a sprung floor so that gymnastics and parkour classes can be held. There are no facilities like this available in the local area.

  • Why are we spending $18 million on the North Adelaide Basket Ball Club? Any facilities should be for the benefit of local residents as a first priority.

Define what you will provide for the local residents first. The Basket Ball club should be last on the list.

  • *Would like to have facilities for the following sports and have social games too
    – Basketball
    – indoor soccer
    – badminton
    – netball

*Swimming pool would be good and to have babies/kids swimming programs etc.
*Love to have a gym for weight lifting and cardiac training

  • Ninja warrior/parkour gym area so kids (and adults) have a safe area to learn proper skills. Obstacle course racing type of equipment like Ninja Academy in Perth or Ninja HQ in Sydney. And a proper sprung floor and gymnastics gym including a foam pit.

  • In no particular order, Volleyball, table tennis, indoor soccer, indoor cricket and Kindergym facilities would be nice. 🙂

  • Swimming pool and badminton

  • Swimming pool & badminton

  • I think a full function gym (including pool) – something like YMCA at the Parks. They offer a great range of classes and sports.

  • Pool is an absolute necessity for the demographics of the area. 25m pool – similar to the one adjunct to the Parafield Gardens Rec Centre. Outdoor sand volleyball would be a drawcard too.

  • Swimming pool for sure! Badminton and indoor soccer too 🙂

  • Swimming is an absolute must. No pool in the immediate vicinity.
