February to June is traditionally a very busy time for Council due to budget planning.
Staff start budget planning in November, even though finance staff work on it every day, of course, and Elected Members review the progress of the budget quarterly.
This budget cycle, we were invited by staff to submit our ideas for what are euphemistically called ‘new initiatives’. I say ‘euphemistically’ as some ideas from elected members have been around for years before being approved – such as my dog parks idea.
The new ideas window closed on January 13th (it had originally been pre-Christmas which I had changed via Council meeting resolution) by which time I had submitted quite a few suggestions, some last year and some via Council meetings or email to staff.
